Following massacres targeting the Alawite Muslim minority in early March 2025, over 21,000 people fled Syria to northern Lebanon. The UNHCR reported 21,637 arrivals, citing figures from local authorities and the Lebanese Red Cross. The violence, which began on March 6th in a majority-Alawite village, escalated, resulting in over 1,600 civilian deaths. Some sought refuge at the Russian airbase in Hmeimim, while others crossed into Lebanon, joining the already 1.5 million Syrian refugees residing there.
